Personal Training what to expect

What to expect in a Personal Training session

What To Expect in My First Personal Training Gym Visit

If you have had a goal to be a certain body shape but you just can’t stay on track or you’re just not getting the results you wanted.  Maybe you are doing really well but you want to take it to the next level.

Then a Personal Training coach is definitely worth considering.

But if you haven’t had one before you may want to know what to expect.

I believe that finding the right Personal Trainer is key to any fitness related goal regardless of an individuals experience, purely because we all need help to consistently extend past our comfort zones and that is where most dreams sit – just beyond our comfort zone.

Initial session:

Most PTs offer a free initial 30 minute to 60minute session. This is great because it gives you the opportunity to check out the PT and all it costs you is a little time.

What you do want to do is find a PT that you connect with and that you feel has the ability to get results out of you.

On Arrival:

You should get to your session 5minutes early so that you are changed and ready to go. Make sure you have a towel and water with you.

Most gyms have an area where you can sit and wait until your session begins, this is a good time to checkout the vibe of the gym. Don’t worry about warming up as your PT will have a few questions before you start.

Health:

Your PT will ask you a few questions about your health. This is to make sure they train you safely and avoid injury so more information is better than not enough. The questions only take a few minutes.

Goals:

Your PT will also ask you why you are here. Be honest with them and tell them how you feel and why you want change. Be honest about why you think you haven’t achieved it yet as this will help your PT design an effective strategy for you.  Discussing your goals may take 10 minutes or more, but it is definitely worth the time.

Action Plan:

Your PT will tell you what they think you need to do to achieve your goals. Don’t rush this part, take your time and ask questions so that you understand. Also, ask how the PT is going to track your goals and progress.  Talking about your goals and why they are important to you is going to help your PT understand what motivates you and what does not.  It may also tell them what potential challenges you are going to face.

Workout:

The workout will be an example of a typical session.

This will be different depending on your health, fitness level and your goal. It will be challenging at times but it will not be harmful.

Our bodies need to be shocked constantly to create change so it is your PTs job to keep stretching your comfort zone little by little each time.

Post Workout:

Your PT will usually debrief you on how you felt about the session.

Again, this is a time for complete honesty so that any questions or concerns can be discussed.

That way you have all the information you need to decide if this is the right PT for you.

And there you have it, it wasn’t so bad.

Your first session is done and you should be feeling great that you got moving and that you now have a plan in place to create the body that you’ve been dreaming of, and you have someone on your side to help you get there.

It will take time to achieve your goal but believe me it will be a lot faster than if you just went to your local gym and trained yourself.

Good luck with your goal and remember,

Success is a journey not a destination.
